    low/struggling idle

http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=89249&highlight=idle+low lots of info on here. search for another one if this isn't the culprit. i bet is is $2 of carb cleaner & wipe down the throttle body. just don't get your sensors wet (tps mostly).

    Steering wheel loose

Are you saying that your steering gear is loose (turns back and forth easy)? Did you try to grab the steering shaft, is that loose? I think there is a bearing after the torx bolts. Here are some pics to the bolts. http://www.chevyasylum.com/column/tiltcol.html

ok still no brakes.. last shot before i bring it to a shop

Since air is lighter, you will want to replace the passenger caliper. You want the bleeder to be on top, where the air can escape. Sounds like no air being able to escape from pass. side. Replace!

Dumb question . . smaller than stock tire size

Yup, like Mambeau said, you'll be fine (look in your glovebox--stock size is 205/75R15). Thats what I ride on, pizza cutters, most of the year. You not only save a little gas, but you get to feel the engine power!

    4.0 Starting Problems.

DC will have the part, but any parts store should have access to a CPS. Some prefer the dealer parts. Very important part. Go to your favorite auto store online (napa.com, autozone.com, etc) and compare the online prices. Sounds like CPS, can be intermittent.

    Injectors....

What year? Here is a link, which states, that 87-95 are interchangeable with 4.0 and 2.5. http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsJEEP.asp Hope this helps.

stutters only when cold (idles around 5-600)

I was just about to post this same problem ('88 MJ 4.0L auto). I have the exact same symptom, and it too started with a low idle. It starts and idles great for about 10 seconds, but then the idle starts to slowly dive toward 0 for a few seconds (shakes) and sometimes dies, but when it is warm...

    running ritch, low power

Just throwing this out there, but maybe check to CPS too. I know the big sign is for the Jeep to completely die, but there was a thread last year on another board where the CPS (CKP), which tells the timing, was off and created a little idle/hesitation. May affect richer conditions?? Most...

    MJ 1 ton package?

It would also have a extra leaf (heavy duty) on the rear suspension along with a decal in the rear window for the later ones, or an emblem on the tailgate for earlier years.

    Crankshaft Position Sensor on '88

Did you resolve the issue? I have been trying to narrow down the same symptoms you are experiencing on my '88, although, sometimes mine dies at idle and it seems to happen for the first few minutes of startup and is less troublesome when the engine is hot. I would love to replace all of my...

    Rough Idle

pete, i was just searching, and i am in the exact same boat you are in. i have a rough idle that is great initially, and then every 8 seconds or so it will drop to 100 rpms for a few seconds and then it will recover itself back up to about 800 rpms or sometimes it will just die. i have...

    '88 hiccups at idle

Maybe post this on the main board. I have this exact symptom creeping up on me. I started to noticed it a month ago (was subtle), but now it is getting to the point where it dies and happens any time it is at idle. Not sure myself. I cleaned the throttle body, replaced the gasket, cleaned...

    Jeep MJ 4.0L Help

may help to run through your sensors . . . pro'ly not your CPS, but maybe your CTS!!! read on... go here.... http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Engine/Basic_Sensors_Diagnostics.htm also, perform a search (on top of page) for 'cold idle.' i believe it is in a "closed loop" condition, where...
