Not on an axle, but on the driveshaft, I have cut the cross of the u-joint with a sawzall, and even a cutting torch. Obviously you have to be careful, but cutting the cross maybe an option for you.

Consider soldering your wiring connections. The solderless connectors are prone to corrosion just like any other metal, but if you solder the corrosion happens on the outside of the joint not right in between the conductors. I have had more trouble with solderless connectors than I care to...

Yeah, my 2.8 has 4.10 gears, Dana 30 disco up front and Dana 35 in back.
