Does a bad oil pump just not work at all, or does it behave similar to a bad oil sending unit?

Ill try the Oil pressure sending unit first. But what does a bad oil pump usually do?

My oil pressure gage has been reading eradically lately. When i accelerate from a stop the reading goes way down to 10, then when im cruising it goes back and forth in between 30 and 50. Could this be my oil pump taking a crapola? OPSU? 1997 XJ 4.0 AW4
