Well, I figured this out, took out the bolts from the bracket that held the cable and found a place to put a flathead and pry the adjuster open. Adjusted the cable and also found that the plastic piece inside the shifter in the cab had a broken tab. Fixed that. Went to bleed the brakes and found...

    1988 XJ Shift Cable Adjustment

I reckon tomorrow I will pull the whole cable assembly so I can get a good look at it. Will post pics for future people who might have issues.

    1988 XJ Shift Cable Adjustment

When the shifter is in Park, the transmission is actually in Neutral so I am trying to adjust it out to where Park is Park but I am unsure how to adjust it out to a longer length so it will reach the shift level on the transmission.

I posted this over in the OEM tech board, but have not gotten a response yet. Any of you guys down here know anything about Shift Cable adjustments?

    1988 XJ Shift Cable Adjustment

Anyone have a real life picture of this part here? I found it on mine, but cannot seem to locate the 'adjuster clamp' it speaks of to release the cable:

Yeah, the wife and kids were napping so I went out and worked on it a bit this morning. Pull the column to check the linkage to the transmission?

Well, she's alive and kicking. Went down to the Pull-A-Part in Birmingham the other day and picked up a starter solenoid and ECU. Put them on and she started up. Also starts up now with the switch so I got rid of the push button that the PO put on there. Tested out the transmission and found...

I finally found a picture of that component in the Haynes manual. It says that it is a Motorcraft starter solenoid. Here is a link to a new one, but my starter appears to have the solenoid built into it so I do not know if this is even necessary. The wiring diagram in the manual is not all...

I decided to go ahead and try to locate the reason that the switch will not turn the starter. I located a green wire coming from the starter and going to this thing here (green wire on the center terminal) that is mounted directly behind the battery (which I have no idea what it is at this time...

Thanks for the suggestions guys, gonna head on out and test out some of the ideas. Hopefully this will not be a nightmare. The kids that I bought it from did not seem to know what they were doing. Still trying to figure out why they have a push button under the hood for the starter. Have not...

    SEC KARMA thread

Re: SEC Chapter KARMA thread I bet you have already gotten rid of this one, but if you still have it, I bet I could use some parts off it (like the windshield for sure and some missing under the hood items)

Hi, my name is Scot and I am new to the world of Jeep and 4WD in general. I previously had a Dodge Ramcharger, but did not get offroad with it too much and have sold it off and bought a 1988 Jeep Cherokee. I bought it off ATL Craigslist, the guy was asking $200 but I ended up paying $175. The...
