What pressure are you measureing on the fuel rail when it's acting up? Could be that the fuel pump relay is starting to cut out due to wear & pitted contacts. That could explain the change of pitch you heard from the pump. RD

Interesting, my 2001xj (102,000) is getting a P0306 misfire at idle. Mine also runs strong when cold and starts surging when warm, sometimes cutting out and feels like a rev limiter is being activated.
