I think it already says this in my profile, but I'll put it in here just in case. I've got an '87 XJ and it has a pretty nasty clunk in the front end. It only seems to happen when putting a load on the suspension either by going over a bump or by turning at speed. Low speed turning seems to have...
Battery cables are good. The ground strap isn't pretty, but if that's the primary chassis ground, I would assume that if it dies, that would kill the radio and lights as well, which it has never done.
I do know that I still have a pretty severe blow-by issue. I changed the valve cover gasket...
But would a bad ballast in any way cause a hard start issue? I suppose if it killed the fuel pump long enough, it would have to rebuild pressure before starting, but I could be wrong.
Another thing to note (which I probably should have mentioned in the beginning) is that I've only experienced...
After looking at the wiring diagram, I'm almost positive the ballast resistor isn't the issue. If I'm understanding it correctly, the ballast resistor is bypassed completely when the starter relay is active. Based on that, I would say that I wouldn't be having the hard start issues after it...
What is allowable tolerance? The resistor calls out 1.1Ω but measures a consistent 1.7Ω. That's 60% difference, but I would think that still wouldn't be enough to cause my problems. I guess I'll try bypassing it, but if that doesn't fix the problem, what would be the next logical course of...
I'm suffering from intermittent stalling/hard starting, and I think it may be the ballast resistor. Does anyone know the spec for the resistor? I have an ohm meter, but I have no idea what it should read.
When I first looked at it, I thought "it's distasteful, but it would be pretty easy to get it back" but then I saw the interior and I actually started to feel bad.
Ditto. The difference is that my family is in machining and manufacturing, and things aren't going well at all right now. Everyone has had to take a 10% pay cut in the past month, they've completely cut overtime, and it's looking like they'll be laying a bunch of people off in the coming weeks...
Saigas are very good. The only real problem with them is the magazines are hard to come by, and when you do find them, they tend to be pretty expensive.
My '87 4.0L AT has recently started to die after lifting off the gas while slowing to a stop or for slow corners. The problem is intermittent and is sometimes hard to reproduce. Upon dying, it's usually fairly difficult to get restarted though it will act like it wants to run. My first thought...
I'm extremely surprised at how civil this discussion has been. I've seen many similar topics on many different types of internet forums, and they all end with a couple people calling each other names that I'd not repeat in front of my parents. For that, I have to commend my fellow XJers.
