Will a 1998/99 WJ have the 0331 head?

I thought I'd update this thread, as I finally pulled off the valve cover. But alas, it's still unconfirmed. The head is stamped with "NHI", "1999" and "WJ" between cylinder 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4, respectively. Outside of the valve cover, on the manifold side, it also reads "203". So, no reference...

Sputtering/misfire, P0302 code and low compression?

Wouldn't that yield a distinct noise/exhaust note? There is no sound from the valvetrain that I can hear. I kind of skipped sensory stuff after having identified the compression issue. The plugs are Champion RC12ECC (which I believe is the standard mnfg. recommendation?), and they were all...

Will a 1998/99 WJ have the 0331 head?

Here's sort of an update for this sorry saga: https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?p=246758668#post246758668

Sputtering/misfire, P0302 code and low compression?

Hey, guys. Just bought a 140k miles '98/99 WJ w/ 4.0L (see https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1165164) sight unseen. Not many miles into the 500 mile trip home (half of which pulling a 4k lbs trailer) CEL comes on and a sporadic sputtering presents itself. The sputtering appear as...

Will a 1998/99 WJ have the 0331 head?

Thanks, guys. I guess the doubt persists. Will buy it regardless and let you know what I find.

Will a 1998/99 WJ have the 0331 head?

Hey, guys! Looking at buying a 4.0L WJ (a rare Limited-spec'd Laredo w/ part-time NP242) with 140k miles. Build date is 07.11.1998 (MY 1999), Texas delivery. Will this vehicle have the infamous 0331 casting head? I have been reading contradictory information about the very first WJs...

Buying a '98 with tranny leak - potential pitfalls?

Thanks, guys. So, I guess a presumptive worst-case scenario would be a front seal? I have done a rear output seal on a 2wd AW4 which was a stroll in the park. I guess the front is x-amount of times more difficult?

Buying a '98 with tranny leak - potential pitfalls?

Going to take a look at a '98 4.0 4dr (think it's a Limited) with auto/4wd tomorrow, and thought I would do some due diligence beforehand. Owner claims it has a tranny leak and (therefore) stopped driving it three weeks ago. I can only speculate as far as extent (of) and location of leaks...

What tools are needed for water pump replacement?

Like the title suggests? I have to borrow/buy everything needed. :bawl: Only thing I know for sure is 1/2" socket for the pulley/flange bolts and 13mm for belt tensioner bolts. (`96 4.0)

Strange RPM surging issue with BWD made TPS?

After being out another $120 for a Mopar sensor, I was having the exact same problem. I had unhooked the battery when messing with the BWD sensors with the intent to reset the brain. Well, after unplugging all three harness connectors to the ECU it now idles and shifts normal (aside from some...

How much end-play is acceptable on the output shaft of an AW4?

    I.e. the tail-end output shaft on a 2WD version?

AW4 tail cone leak worse with new parts?

Bringing this back to life. So, the clue was (obviously) to use the completely rubber-covered (later model?) version of the seal. Is this a Timken or SKF unit, part #? Moreover, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the "spring" that you guys keep referring to?

Strange RPM surging issue with BWD made TPS?

Strange story: My OEM/old (defect) TPS makes the vehicle ('96 4.0) idle @ 950, but result in excessive RPM tranny shifts. I have now tried two (2) identical BWD sensors from O'Reilley's, and they both do the same: With the sensor connected, but unscrewed from the TB, the motor idles @ 950 RPMs...

High idle, hesitancy and dying after replacing TPS? ('96)

Thanks for valuable input, guys. Here's an update: Went through and dried out/cleaned out the aforementioned connections, plus adjusted the TV cable (had forgotten that I played with it). Now the vehicle works tons better, responsive and tranny is silky smooth through all gears. However, there...
