replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

doesn't sound like much fun for someone with sciatica ;P i was quoted 1100 for the freeze plug job by a local shop - seemed a tad high to me - what do you think is a fair price to pay for this ...? I think I'll probably have to pay someone for this unless i can get a friend to help ...

replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

knowing my penchant for breaking five other things while i repair the one i might consider just taking it in to a mechanic

replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

ok thanks for all the helpful advice - so .. NO ONE here has tried doing it from below? i guess you'd have to take the manifold off to get to the header bolts anyway (?)

replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

oh dear - i'm still recovering from a REALLY EXTREME overheat i had a few years back (warped head and all) ... but wouldn't the manifold distort with the block?? hmmm ...

replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

just had another look - seems if I can drop my exhaust header i could get to it sufficiently but as it stands there seems to be only about an inch or two in front of the plug to the header downpipe ... seems much easier than doing it from above ... (?)

replacing frost plug - technique? any good writeups anywhere?

I have a badly leaking frost plug suddenly after getting the XJ back from the shop ... but it's the third one along the block (from front) and well hidden by (i guess the motor mount?? or maybe it's the manifold?) - is there a relatively easy or maybe preferred way of doing this without having...

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

i guess this must be the result of my having gone through the harnesses etc looking for bad grounds ... so im guessing the problem was electrical in nature (since no mechanical interventions seem to have had an effect) ... i guess at least it gives me a clue for future troubleshooting (if it...

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

well - i'll be damned ... i just started it up a few minutes ago to see if my battery was finally charged (seems it was) and i ran it for 15-20 minutes and no acceleration .... (WTF?) - i guess i'll take my blessings where i find them and pray it doesn't return but I guess if this is going to be...

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

THANK YOU for the advice - it gives me a short list at least - yes the IAC was one of the first things i tested ... bought a replacement just in case and swapped it out - no change ... (see early on in the thread - i know ... too much to go through) but yeah i did ... IAC and another sensor at...

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

well the garage had it for FIVE WEEKS and didn't do crap except give me excuses and tell me things I already told them - in the end they told me to take it to the dealer - i guess they didn't want to be bothered with an older (92) jeep ... maybe they thought there was no money in it ** SIGH **...

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

looking through the FSM i guess the AIS motor would be an obvious possible culprit since (i guess) it controls the idle speed directly ... although i'm not clear on whether a defect there would cause the computer to send the signals supposedly being read by their diagnostic tools (?) help! :P

Idle speed going through the ROOF on warming up : 97 XJ 4.0 HO

not sure if you saw my update .. what do you think i should tell the guy? to at least check the injectors etc before having it towed out ?? i told him your suggestions about the vacuum leaks and he said he 'checked around and didn't find anything' but that the computer was telling the IAC to go...
