Never in my life have I heard of, or seen a cherokee of any year model not starting because of a bad ECM. Have you checked/ replaced your crankshaft position sensor?
Perhaps the center ball in the double cardan part of your rear shaft is bad. My front shaft on my 87' did that same thing until it blew up and ridded my t-case in half. Then I drove it 500 miles home on half a t-case.... joy... Is your rear shaft new or used?

Is that 185 each side, or for a pair? I'm guessing it's per side. So where do I get them from? Mine aren't giving me trouble yet but it looks like a worthwhile upgrade just to avoid these problems in the future.
just rough up the area with some sandpaper. you don' need to sand it to bare metal, just rough it up and clean it with mineral spirits or alcohol. no need to prime it first either.
depending on what type of epoxy it is, I would try dissolving it with paint thinner, varsol, or brake parts cleaner. I have found that each of these solvents dissolves different types of cured epoxies quite well... some better than others of course. No reason to cut up the sheet metal if you...
