I ran stock shocks on my BB XJ for close to a year with no issues, including wheeling it. you should be fine. but you should definitely plan on replacing them with what should go on it.

cost aside, I have to ask WHY? the 4.2,3.5/3.7,2.8/2.9 engines are ALL JUNK. the early 6cyl's had piston issues, and a lot of them across the board have cyl head issues, and even if you luck out and find one with over 100k and in decent shape, you still have a very limited amount of aftermarket...

if it were me: as long as the suspension isnt worn out and doesnt have anything wrong with it, I would leave it alone. buy some newer tires suitable for the wheeling you plan to do (aka thicker sidewalls if you're playin in rocks) add some armor and a locker or 2 and let it ride. it sounds...
