When I did mine, I cut the wires up near the turn signal lever. Then I taped them to the plug on the end of the wires on the new lever, and pulled it down.
I pulled my control valve out last spring and flushed the heater core. It didn't seem to effect the a/c cooling at all. I also didn't have to flush my heater core this past winter to get heat.
I just replaced my CPS. Every couple days it would crank without starting. If I unplugged the sensor (near the back of the valve cover) and plugged it back in, it would start.
Are you sure you have the switch turned the correct way. I just looked at an one I had sitting around (for a 90, 4.0. auto) the hole for the rod should be facing down, and the prongs for the plugs should be parallel to the ground, and facing towards the passenger side. If the plug is turned...
