In my case is caused the check engine light because the NSS was blowing the fuse which was tripping my check engine light. I have an 01 though so perhaps its different for different years.
I second the likely hood of the neutral safety switch being bad. I had this problem and just followed this http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm to fix it. One way to help diagnose this is it typically blows a fuse in your passenger side kick panel fuse area, at least it did for me...
I fixed this problem on my dads xj. Just go buy some auto speaker wire and run a new wire. It's the easiest solution. getting through the rubber boot can be tricky so I just passed it around the out side of the boot and its been working fine for quite a while now.
I'm not sure. I left it with a mechanic friend while I was out of town but based on the previous work he's done for me and his drag racing and demo derby cars I'd say he likely did the job right. Only thing I can think of is the rotors didn't get turned.

So my Jeep will randomly make this awful noise when braking. When it starts making the noise it will make it pretty consistently for the rest of my journey. Like I said it shows up randomly though, sometimes it won't make the noise at all, sometimes it won't the noise until I'm almost home, and...
So my XJ is sittin on the RE 3.5" lift. Based on talking to other guys the 10" 5150's seem to work well up front. I haven't been able to get a clear answer on the rear though. The RE mono-tubes I have now measure 24.3" extended and 14.9" collapsed. The 8" travel bilsteins measure 22.5" and...
Had a problem with my XJ with the valve sticking causing the plug to carbon up and not fire. Would run a can a decarbon crap through it and the problem would be fine for like a month then it would return. Finally got it narrowed down and taken care of. Since you've already changed things...
