    Not your average engine knock

Sidriptide, I didn't take it at a rant at all. That's the same feeling I had about the noise and how I could go nuts trying to trace it. When I was looking into it more I kept hearing not to ignore it, it could be this,it could be that, your engine is on it's way out, just live with it they're...

    Not your average engine knock

Damn, that is one hell of a crack. I've seen some do that around the center. I just don't think you can see up around the center where yours cracked without dropping the tranny. That's why I was hoping the endoscope could see up there. Isn't there a spacer that goes over the center bolts as...

I didn't watch my mechanic but I absolutely trust them. They mainly only work on Jeeps and I've been going there for 15 years. I inspected the plate briefly myself but I just bought an endoscope so that I can hopefully see closer towards the center bolts.

Okay,Just got my compression tester. I've never done a test before but I followed a couple write-ups I found online. Here's what i got. I ran the Jeep for at least 20 mins until it was hot.I then pulled all the plugs and pulled the asd and fuel pump relays. Hooked up the gauge and got these for...

    Not your average engine knock

King, The knock doesn't go away in gear. It stays the same in all gears. It's mainly on light acceleration that it's heard. It's pretty much only at the 1200-1500 rpm range. It's nonexistent after that. I pulled the inspection cover off and didn't see any cracks and bolts were tight. If this...

    Not your average engine knock

I need to get a compression tester this weekend but I at least pulled the plugs. They seemed fine. This is the one from the #6 cylinder. It seemed the same as the others. I ran it again for about 20 minutes while disconnecting the fuel injectors. I think there's a definite change in the knock...

Why would eliminating the #6 cylinder quiet the noise then Daking? That shouldn't affect the flexplate correct? I'm hoping for a flexplate crack over an engine rebuild.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully I can pull the plug tomorrow and post the results. I had just done cap, rotor, wires and plugs though. Knock was there before and after now that I think back on it though.

Marvel Mystery Oil. I've had 4 Cherokees and none made a noise like this.

I should add that I also inspected the flex plate for cracks but didn't see any. I'm leaning away from this now though since it changes when I disconnect #6 cylinder

    Not your average engine knock

Update I have done two oil changes since I posted last. It's still been less than 2k though. I tried switching oil filters, ran a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil with my oil and just the other day switched to Rotella t6 5-w40 with still no change to the knock. I just went outside and disconnected...

Thanks Old Man for your opinion. I'm leading more towards this but wanted some opinions before I have to lower the transmission.

    Not your average engine knock

Oil debates tend to be worse than religion and politics. Mechanic said the flex plate didn't look cracked but I may have to investigate for myself.

Thanks for watching. Any explanation as to why it would go away after driving for a while and only at certain rpm? I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just trying to learn.

Mtbxj87 I had never used Pennzoil until after researching. Most people said it was some of the best running oil in the 4.0 and the quietest. It also has a good amount of detergents in it. Do you have an opinion on why you don't like it?
