    instrument cluster colors

Here's a tach from an 87, the "red" cluster replaced this from 88-up, but they kept the 'blue-gray' color scheme for the base cluster and the huge gas gauge+ gauges (Pioneer)

    Silly shift knob question

So, I'm looking online at a new OEM 5-speed shift knob for my '87 (BA-10), it claims it's for AX-15 only but I wonder if that's correct, any reason that it wouldn't work? Might the threading be different between the two trannies? The knob looks the same. I'll probably buy it anyway, just...

AC / HVAC Temp Slider Stuck

My 87 did the same thing. If you sit in the passenger seat and wiggle slide the temp slider back and forth (hot to cold) and look under the dash you can see a cable pulling a little valve-type thing back and forth. After I found this I was able to manually "push" this valve all the way to...

    Overhead console temp question

Actually, I think there's a short somewhere, disconnected would be "OC". I suppose you fix it the same way though.

What's the stupidest thing you ever did that you would admit to?

While working under the hood, I lost a screw and couldn't find it, I heard it hit some metal so I thought it ended up in the bumper or something and forgot about it. Moments later I started it up and it made a horrible grinding noise and I shut it off. Turned out it got stuck in one of the...

    whats your gas mileage?

I get about 17-18 city and at least 25 highway- '87 4.0L and 5 speed, completely stock, some spirited driving here and there and usually going 70-75 on the freeway. AMC must have done something right.

    overhead console thermometer problems.

Mine read "OC" which I assume means "open circuit" when I was testing it without a temp sensor connected. I would check the wiring to the temp sensor (behind the front bumper) or possibly the sensor itself. You could try disconnecting the temp sensor and bridging the connector with a small...

    Selec-Trac Advantages

Which manual tranny are you using? Would a 242 bolt up to an '87 with the Peugeot?

93 ZJ, trying to get to throw codes.

I thought 55 was the "end of codes" code, but I have a Renix so what the hell do I know.

    New to the Junk Yard

I was referring to these "kids" or other people that just walk around without any real purpose- checking out rims and stuff like that. And they literally have NO tools of their own. I like to have a buddy with so when one of us is underneath a vehicle the other one can keep an eye on the tools...

    New to the Junk Yard

My local yard doesn't allow torches or jacks- safety I guess. I'm pretty sure the $1 covers the insurance they must have to pay for allowing anybody to roam the yard. I really don't like going by myself though, I've seen some creepy people wandering around. What gets me is people who come...

My Best MPG!!! Trust me it's not what you Think...

To know exactly how much gas you burned, fill the tank til the pump cuts out, reset the trip meter and drive around for a while. Then, fill the tank completely full once again. The pump will tell you how much went in, and assuming it cut out at the same "fullness" as before this should be an...

    Bad Brakes

Isn't there a vacuum switch under there for the cruise control? I would think a hissing would mean a vacuum leak near the brake pedal.

    Rattling sound in the tailgate

Check the interior liftgate panel (the one that covers the lower half). I'm 99.9% sure that's was rattling on my 87 as it is loose. Probably will end up with a duct tape fix.

Different Speedo cable connection on an 87 than 88+ ???

Interesting. I swapped in a '90 cluster, and then later an '89, into my '87 Pioneer. The cable connections were identical. '87 was the first year of the newer cable type, but mine was built in Jan 87 and IIRC they started using the newer type beginning in Sept 86. Do you know when yours was...
