Just went through this issue and this is the exact symptom. I'm trying to find the thread that helped me but have had no luck so far. I have a 97 with a new 4.7 stroker. Same thing would happen, it would take me 20-30 min before I could restart the jeep. I thought at first it was a vapor...
Pass on the Bilstein. I went through 3, all fronts in 30k. Finally ditched them for a Nitro set and couldn't be happier. The 5100's are pretty stiffly valved. Well there's that, and they are junk imo.
I went the ATK stroker route. Not the cheapest but comes with warranty. So far 6k miles on it. Seems to actually be getting stronger. I went ahead and put a header, flowcooler waterpump, bored TB, and port matched horseshoe intake on it. Was a fun build, we will see how long it lasts...
Had to chime in my 2 cents on this one.
$136 + $29 for shipping = $165 for a couple of plates with holes and a rod with a few welds. Maybe for 65-75 but I'll pass on the $165.
Just like everyone else said, 2-axle trailer with brakes on at least one axle, stay below 4k lbs and drive very careful. I tow a 4k load with dual axle and no trailer brakes but it's only 5 minutes away from my house :)
I went with an ATK stroker and so far am very pleased. Only time will tell though I'm still breaking it in at 300 miles. So far ATK customer service has been pretty good although the real test is if/when I have to use the warranty.
Or me which had to do the same. Sounded exactly like a knocking flexplate but ended up spitting out the piston skirt of #6 and both the rings. Newer 4.0's are starting to show some pretty nasty colors as they age. I'm not the only one this has happened to. Mine only had 115k miles on it.
Junkyard 4.0's are going between 650-1k out here. It would probably be high mileage and I don't want this to happen again. My motor spit the bottom half of the piston out, both sets of rings and a full sandwich bag full of piston. I would have had to do a full rebuild which would have taken a...
Shop found the remnants of #6 pistons skirt in my oil pan. Sounded like a tapping lifter at first that would come and go. One morning I started it up and it sounded terrible, kind of like a hammer hitting the back of the block. All this with only 115k on the odometer.
Since I have too much...
I agree with this 100%. I would have been screwed on the trail last weekend if I had a full time locker up front. Going down a tight path that ended in a 45 degree left hand downhill turn. It plowed enough with the open diff, couldn't imagine a locked one.
