On my 97 XJ the regulator is on top of the pump (along with the filter). That is why I don't understand the reasoning behind a check valve in the pump when the regulator is right there to hold pressure to the rail.?
I have seen several people refer to a check valve in the pump. Is this valve actually in the pump or in the regulator on top of the pump?
Can someone explain what the regulator actually does? It would seem the regulator would hold the pressure in the rail instead of the pump check valve.?
It is starting hard as it cranks several times before firing. Once running it does fine. When I cycle the key 5 or 6 times to prime the pump it will usually fire right up. It is obviously not holding pressure in the rail (as the pressure gauge confirmed). I just don't know if it is the pump...
Re: Fuel pressure problem
My situation is this: My 97 XJ is at 40 psi when idling...that would seem to indicate a pump problem if the spec is 49. When I shut it off, the pressure at the rail drops completely off to 0 in less than a second. That would seem to indicate the pressure regulator...
So does that require a new pump?? I've read something about installing a BMW check valve inline. Is this worth doing or is it worth the time to simply replace the pump?
I am still having the problem of hard starting. I got a fuel pressure gauge and it is at 40 psi when idling. Is this normal for a '97?? I've looked in my Haynes manual and can't find the spec for a 97. When I shut it off the pressure immediately drops to zero.
When trying to start it...
Well I guess my dumb question is how hard is it to swap the injectors? Is it worth the time to do this or should I try something else first? Will I have to replace the orings when I swap the injectors?
I just discovered several posts talking about injector leaks on the manifold and I got a...
I've tried turning the key on for 10-15 seconds before starting and it still doesn't want to start right up (does the same thing...cranks for 5 seconds or more before firing). I've also tried turning the key on then off then on about 3 cycles to see if that would make any difference but it...
I have not checked the fuel pressure...how would I do that?
I tried holding the key on for 5 seconds and then starting and it still did the same thing.
One note I didn't mention before: it starting doing this 2 weeks ago when the weather was very hot (upper 90's and humid). Not sure if...
This is my first visit to the site. Looks like some great information. I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. My '97 XJ Sport started experiencing hard starting a couple of weeks ago. It will crank several times but not start, acts like it is not getting fuel. When I shut...
