Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

I have an update to this saga. I left the XJ sitting for a period of weeks. Then I finally got around to messing with it this weekend. I tried starting it and it did the same crank, fire off, then die scenario it's been doing. So I plugged in a spark tester on one of the plugs to see if it had...

Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

It does register oil pressure just fine. The rest of the gauges appear to work normally too. I will check the voltage at the resistor next chance I get. I really appreciate everyone’s suggestions.

I own a fuel pressure gauge. It holds 35 psi.

Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

I bypassed the ballast resistor and it didn’t change anything, unfortunately. It still cranks, stumbles, and dies. The pump is running. I’m going to invest in a spark tester to see if it cuts spark but I don’t think that’s it. The fact that it did this previously and then worked, then is...

Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

Ok, I'll jumper the ballast resistor this evening and try it. I also have a spare I can throw in but I might just leave it off.

Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

Yall mean the ballast resistor for the fuel pump? I’ve junketed the fuel pump and it runs great and supplies 35psi after a few seconds. It powers on for a second when you first turn the key. I didn’t bother to check if it’s running constantly when cranking. I’ll have to jumper it and then crank...

Cranks, Fires, Dies - 1991 Briarwood Restoration

I'm back seeking help with my restoration of a 1991 Briarwood. It's been running great until I left it parked for awhile. Now when I crank it, it will fire off and then immediately die. If you try repeatedly it may occasionally stumble for a full second and then die. Holding down the gas pedal...

Crank, no start even with new CPS...

Is the engine attempting to fire? stumble?

    1991 Cranks, Fires, then dies.

So it’s been a long time since I messed with my Briarwood just due to other things taking my time but I decided one day to go mess with it again and put in a fresh battery. I turned the key and held it down for several seconds and it started and ran. I’ll have to replace the switch but for now...

I will try this next. Thanks!

    1991 Cranks, Fires, then dies.

So here’s an update- I got a used throttle body and installed a new throttle position sensor on it and put it on the Briarwood. It still didn’t fix the issue. It still fires off and then dies. Considering I have a new CPS, TPS, and sufficient fuel pressure, I’m stumped.

    1991 Cranks, Fires, then dies.

So I have a quick update. I checked my fuel pressure and it’s around 30-40 psi. I disconnected the throttle position sensor and it made no difference making me wonder if it is the problem. I got a replacement but in the course of trying to remove the old one I discovered that the screws holding...

    1991 Cranks, Fires, then dies.

I have a fuel pressure gauge in order. I’ll check that this week. I will probably go ahead and order a throttle position sensor. I’ve replaced several other sensors but that one is probably due too. I will clean the battery terminals and make sure they’re good and tight. It’s been on and off...

    1991 Cranks, Fires, then dies.

I'm trying to revitalize a sweet 1991 Cherokee Briarwood. It was running beautifully but after being left for a couple weeks without running it has started a new issue. When I turn the key it cranks normally, fires off, then dies. It does that each time the key is turned. Giving it throttle...
