Sorry for the late response. I have two housings i can chose to play with if need be. Both are np231j assembly #53008208. The serial number on case A. is 53902 and case B. is 45902. I haven't had a chance to look down the input yet. Will check first light.

I think you nailed it Kastein. I started putting it all back together today. I got further than the mechanic at least. Although i'm about 1/4" off. Looks like I have the longer input shaft model. YAY>. Time to find a new input gear and swap out. I no longer have the original. If anyone knows...

Working on that now. Looks like it's mostly dealing with a mechanic that doesn't know anything about 4x4. I went with a friends suggestion on picking this mechanic. Not the best decision i've made. I'll give an update when I figure it out for sure.
