AW4 acting sketchy - time for a new slushbox?

I changed it about 4 years ago or so IIRC it looked like used engine oil - put in about a gallon of DexIII at that time. It's sat pretty much since then. I've only just recently started running it again. So I figure it's an average of 1 gallon @ 500 miles, and the rest about 2 gallons @ 200k...

AW4 acting sketchy - time for a new slushbox?

Here's what came out...I might have to do more than one fluid swap. Anyone for a transmission cocktail? Still draining at the moment...will top it off with fresh Dex once it's done.

If the weather holds tomorrow, I'll do these as well. Thx, Cruiser. :)

AW4 acting sketchy - time for a new slushbox?

I'll give this a shot. I've got 2 gallons of Dex III/Merc. If the weather holds tomorrow, I'll drain, drop the pan, and refill.

AW4 acting sketchy - time for a new slushbox?

Fluid last changed c.2 yrs ago (about 500 miles worth of driving). Color seemed kind of golden/brownish, smelled like transmission fluid, I guess. Well, I pulled the fuse and took it for a short hop. It slipped in all gears. Looks like I'll be installing the backup transmission after all...

AW4 acting sketchy - time for a new slushbox?

My Jeep almost let me sit along the road today. 88 Pioneer, 210k, bone stock. Driving through some hilly areas, the gears just went away when making a 3-4 shift going uphill. Coasted to a stop at the side of the road. Upon restart, it shifted fine...for about 3 miles then same thing, until I...

    uphill rattling

Had similar issues with mine, albeit it's 10 years older than yours. Horrible rattling sound. It was more of a noise than a vibration - and I ruled out the exhaust hitting the crossmember the only other thing I could think it would be. Replaced the cat (super cheap - only $105.00) at the...

    xj wont stay running

Lots of suggestions, but tough to make an accurate call without more information. Could be pretty much anything spark or fuel delivery related from a loose/bad CPS, ECU failure, debris in the fuel tank, dead fuel pump, are just a few things that come immediately to mind. Take it step by...

how do I remove the damn water pump

D'oh! Should have read the whole thread.... I had 3 shorts and 1 long that that bolted directly to the block, 14mm heads, and of course the smaller 4 13mm heads went to the pulley. The one "long" bolt for the WP, goes in the hole right above where the lower rad hose slips on b/c the casting...

how do I remove the damn water pump

A friendly tip having just completed this very task last weekend. Put a piece of plywood, sheetmetal, or whatever against the radiator if you plan on keeping it in while you replace it. Space is tight, and a slip of a ratchet/wrench will booger up the radiator fins something fierce. Would...
