Interesting link from gearwhine! From 2003...when I installed the Tomken sliders on my XJ Waggy. I've had some hard hits on them and they have held up great for the past 16 years. Just my experience though.

My money is on the lower control arm. Stick your head out of the window and watch front tire as you reverse and brake. I bed you'll see some movement.

When you have the "wet brakes" feeling, how is the pedal? Is it still hard, but just no breaking? Is it soft...like it goes to the floor? Does pumping the brake pedal help?

I'm confused...what is a "manual AW4". Does the OP mean manually shifting an AW4, or is OP referring to a manual (AX-15) transmission?

I know you said you replaced the fuel pump, but did you check the fuel pressure at the rail? Really sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem.

I don't think the NP242 came paired with the front axle CAD. My '89 has the 242 and a solid passenger side shaft...and has regular u-joints, not CV joints.

I'd look for a vacuum leak, or possibly a throttle body gasket leak. Engine produces highest vacuum when throttle is closed, and lowest vacuum at wide open throttle.

Have you been adjusting the set screw on the steering box? Some people adjust this screw in an attempt to tighten up the steering. If it's too tight, it won't self-return to center.

Anything you recently did, especially right before an issue, is suspect as related to the problem! That being said, that sounds to me like a vacuum leak, which would make it "surge"...idle high as well.

As a clarification, the car should not move in 4Full Time with on of the drive shafts missing. 4Full Time utilizes a differential between front and rear output shafts...this is why you can use it full time (all the time, even on dry roads). 4Part Time should not be used on drive pavement, but...
