I don't know the history of your XJ, but is it possible one of the axles isn't perpendicular to the line of travel? Check it for square and you should have that answer pretty quickly. Good luck.
jeepboy381, hate to break it to you but you are probably describing a worn engine. When there is too much clearance at the bearings you lose pressure initially. When the oil circulates it fills these gaps and eventually builds pressure. Go to a heavier oil and put in a can of super heavy oil...
I'd stick with the oil quality. Is it thin (low viscosity)? How much drains at the change? Have you recently changed the engine to the '01 block? If so, did you have it checked for cracks? I'm shooting blind, but you shouldn't have black oil after a week. Whatever is causing that symptom is...
