What's the update on this, did you find the problem?
My 2000 XJ just developed a clunking/popping in the front when turning the wheel and so far I haven't spotted anything loose or worn under the front end.
That's interesting.... I've had my fuel gauge suddenly drop to empty a few times in the last few weeks, and when it does the fuel light comes on. When the gauge starts working again and goes back up, the light goes off.
I'm interested in whatever answers you get. I just got a 2000 XJ a few weeks ago. When I started it after lunch on Friday the gauge showed empty and the warning light came on, though it had worked before lunch and I had 3/4 tank of gas. I turned the engine off and restarted, and the gauge was...
Just pull the dip stick and see if the oil is normal, or looks 'milky' or 'chocolate milky'. I am dealing with a blown head gasket on my Dodge pickup. Sucks. Basically I was losing coolant and the engine was getting warmer than usual. Turns out the coolant was going into the oil.

Hi all - just did my 2nd gas fill up on the 2000 XJ that I got last week. I was really surprised to have gotten an average of 19.3 mpg out of this tank of gas, most of which was in town, city driving and very little highway.
One oddity I noticed was that the gas warning light came on when it...
I'm glad you posted this. I'm noticing a lot of oil leaking on my XJ and it looked like rear main to me, from underneath. I will check the other places you mentioned though.
