I have a 1998 XJ sport. AW4 - NP 231 chryco 8.25 rear D-35 high pinion front axle.
My #3 piston decided it didn't need some of its skirt. Long story short I'm trying to buy a used one.
I noticed mine had a D shaped recess in the top. Inside that D shape the area is flat.

I used rubber mallets from Northern tool. They are about 5". I only needed 3" so I cut them down with a sawzall. Obviously need to cut the wooden handle off too.
Gorilla glue holds them down to the lower spring mount.

I have a 98XJ with a 3" lift & 31X10.5 LT15's
The spare wouldn't fit the stock location without unlatching the rear seat back. It fit nicely on the cargo floor, but took up too much space. I got it on the roof now sitting on 4 stock roof rails I got from the junkyard, and 4 blue tie-down...
The studs have little shoulders that will not pass through the crossmember holes.
You must lower at least one side at a time to remove the studs. Otherwise they will strip in the frame.
The fix for that is to drill large 1-1/2" holes in the side of the frame rail to top nut the new bolts...
The info as I got it, was an unmarked 15 amp fuse in the box near the battery.
On my 1998 XJ (4.0L auto 4WD) it happened to be in the location I described.
It's possible that it's at another location in your box.
