I think the cheapest, bolt on upgrade for the steering gear is putting in a gear from a 99 durango. There are quite a few write ups on it here, and it was a very easy install
If there is anybody who would let me rent their car hauler for this weekend please send me a PM. I was going to use a friends, but It was too narrow for my jeep. I need it because I am hauling my XJ down to powerline park and doing some wheeling on Sat and Sun.

I am in the process of doing a durango steering gear switch and I am having problems with the pitman arm. I was able to get it onto the output from the steering gear but I dont know how far up it needs to go. I could only get it onto the shaft a couple of inches, but there is still a few...
I am in the middle of putting the 99 durango box on my 98 and I cant get the intermediate shaft into the gearbox. Did any one have this problem, or are there any tricks to get it back in. It looks simple up the senough, line quared ends and push togather, but I cant get it to slide on the input.
