UPDATE, I did install an electric fan in place of the mechanical one. I just noticed the electric fan mount has come in contact with the pulley bolts.
Looks like I might need new engine and trans mounts and possibly countersunk bolts in the pulley.

How do you know it's bad? A lot of times they just scream if the fluid is low and the fluid becomes foamy. Filling it up and running the steering from lock to lock 3 times usually gets the air out.
If I accelerate hard from a stop, I hear a terrible grinding sound for a moment. I first thought I had a worn U-joint. I replaced both joints in the rear driveshaft since this happens in in 2WD. The problem still exists.

I am using an empty 1 gallon windshield washer bottle and stant cap on my 88. I removed the mech fan and installed a subaru A/C fan in it's place. It is on when the ign is on. The stock electric fan cycles on just about the same duty cycle as it did when I had the mech fan.
This systems works great
