I had a squeal noise from my 89 dist. took it apart, no bearings just bushings. cleaned and regreased the bushings and no more noise and free! Just need to remove the pin holding the gear on and the shaft pulls out.

I just looked on the web-site. it's a controller for lights. Did your Jeep have some kind of lighting on it at some time? Maybe construction, security or even a pilot vehicle for oversize loads.
