Vanilla Gorrilla blog

Nice

Three break in cycles and other than the normal crazy noises the jeep makes the rearend is smooth and quiet. Need to realign the steering wheel and drive it around a bit more. One thing to note. These tires are freakin heavy. Huge difference in power. It was rippin pretty good with the old set. Now it feels supper sluggish. Could so be im used to driving my truck. It has been a while since i drove this beast.

Yeah tires can make a big difference. So can driving other cars then driving your rig

Im not sure ill get 500miles in before this weekend. But i do have a few spare quarts of fluid. I can do it quickly before bronco in the morning. My housing has a drain plug so i dont even have to drop the cover.

I didnt feel like they were that much heavier than the previous set when I was rolling them around. But i new there was a difference. Of course the suburban also feels super sluggish when i drive it after my truck too. I also havent driven it much since we moved. I wonder if its the elevation and its still getting used to it.

Super pumped to wheel with everyone this weekend. We will be missing the sat run as we have my nephews graduation. But we should easily be back in time to help with the bbq if needed.

I never drop the cover. I have a super sucker pumper thingy. BlondeJon told me about them.. haha. Anyways I suck out the old and put in the new. Bam!

Just an fyi for anyone who is coming to the bbq after bronco. I have a pile of crap that needs homes elsewhere. So there will be a table of garage sale items. Super cheap deals

After some measurements and a call to atlas, it looks like i got sold the wrong input shaft for the 4speed. So i trimmed it.

Should be ok. The tcase i had in there was trimmed similarly. It was out of a tj. Came with the long input shaft and needed it to work so i trimmed it. Its been fine for three years.

Wow this place is dead.

So i started today by cutting out the beat to hell cat

There was really not a whole lot left in there.

Then i got it mounted to the trans and checked for interference with the floor

And proceeded to persuade the floor to receive the atlas.

I had enough clearance but the tranny was jammed up in the tunnel and i still had room for the tcase so i clocked it flat and did some more persuading and ended up with this.

The straight bar is on the higher bumped up section of the frame rails and the tcase is hanging 3/4” below the frame. Im happy with that. Ill be either building a new crossmember which i have plenty of steel to do it. Or ill be ordering the stinky fab crossmember.

I wish i would have know how goofy the atlas shifters are. I can see they would work well if i had the tcase lower but ill be fabbing together something for that as i dont want my tcase shifters taller than the trans shifter. I think the range shifter will work fine though being cable driven.

So thats where im stopping today. All in all im at 3hours of work so far. Now that im fabbing a few things it will likely take a bit longer than expected but thus is jeep life.

That's awesome. Mont know if I'll ever get that far in my build but an atlas would be awesome.

Looks good. Flat belly with the atlas is gonna be sweet!

Not gonna be flat. But at least not a huge issue. First crossmember down not sure i stoked on how it turned out but i had the time and material. Started with 2x6 box tube. Tapered the ends and recessed the middle. I may recess the mounting points and raise it up a bit. Or ill just spend the $250 and order the stinky fab and mod that one to fit the atlas. I dont know. I was hoping for less drop at the crossmember as im only at 3.5” lift. I was limited with my trans mount. I may look at getting something different for a mount to see if i can tuck it up higher.

I like it . Looks good

You would need to cut out the center a bit, and box it in to have a flatter crewmember. Do some through holes for the trans mount like stock. If you box it in, should have decent strength. Are you using stock mount or something like stinkyfab?

Yeah its a bushing style mount like stinky fab. I was looking for lower profile mounts. There is a company that makes one for a tj thats about an 1 1/2” tall. Still thinkin about it. Im going to get it on the road and worry about it later. Im working on linkages for the shifters i bought today.

ah linkage was a pain on mine. I hope yours goes easier.

I think i got my linkage figured out. I used those shifters from speedway motors. I might have it in and finished up next weekend. Im working in the bay for a few days this week so no working on it during the week.

On another note. We are celebrating our 13th wedding anniversary today. And my wife surprised me with this.
