FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - APRIL 11, 2015

Land Between the Lakes and Uwharrie National Forests

Members of the Southeast Chapter (SEC) of NAXJA split their time and resources to make donations to two National Forests that sit within the chapter borderlines.
On the East side of the chapter, at Uwharrie National Forest near Troy North Carolina, SEC President Tim Nolan, SEC Vice-President Andy Bagwell, and past SEC board member Glenn Fulmer were present to donate a new auger and associated bit worth $720 to Friends of Uwharrie (FOU). The funds to purchase this needed equipment were made possible by the NAXJA SEC chapter and the national club. This auger and bit will be used by FOU to help maintain the trails at Uwharrie during the monthly trail clean up days. FOU has played a big role in helping to keep Uwharrie open for people to enjoy by putting in countless man hours with minimal equipment. Use of this auger will help increase efficiency and allow efforts to be expanded in keeping the trails protected and open for use.

Meanwhile, on the West side of the chapter, at Turkey Bay (TB) OHV which is located at Land Between the Lakes (LBL) National Forest, near Golden Pond Kentucky other NAXJA members were making contributions. SEC treasurer and national Director-at-Large (DAL) Dirk DeYoung, national (DAL) Mark Morton, and national Recorder Ed Robbins attended the annual Turkey Bay Clean up day. At the cleanup day, the crew weed wacked the kids trail (a contained environment for youngsters to ride 4 wheelers and dirt bike) and collected 8 NAXJA onion sacks of trash from the campsites and around the lakeshore. Also lending a helping hand were Ed and Dirk's daughters, three girls, aged between 6 and 10, and veterans of many NAXJA runs. Later, with the help of other 4x4 clubs in attendance, the NAXJA crew also assisted the LBL and TB staff with the removal of a damaged fence, disassembly of fence around the now abandoned American eagle nest, and painting of the boundary line. The NAXJA crew also donated a check on behalf of the NAXJA SEC chapter and NAXJA, in the amount of $700 to John Rufli, the executive director of the Friends of Land Between the Lakes. While this money is not earmarked for a specific use, Kyle Varel, the acting manager of Turkey Bay, has indicated a need for new fencing at the front of the park.
