Folding rear fender pinch seam without slotting?

I bought some Napier flat flares for my 98 XJ. Most instructions I see (including Napier) basically say to trim up to the spot welds, then create a series of 7,246 slots (avoiding said spot welds), then hammer the pinch weld up into the fender opening.

Is there a better way? I ran across a thread the other day (pretty sure it was on NAXJA, but not 100% positive) that had some high level overview indicating it can be done without slotting the fender. Idiot me forgot to bookmark the page, and I've been trying to find it again for hours with no luck.

He had posted a picture of what looked like maybe 1/2" bar stock with a narrow slot cut into it, which he said he used to work the fender back little by little until it reached the final desired position.

I'm new to metal working so wondering if anyone has tips around this, before I go hacking away and experimenting on my own. :) I'm not really in any hurry, so if I can avoid all the cuts, I would prefer to go that route, even if it means some extra work.

Thanks!

You've probably seen this video from Dirk who owns DPG.
This is his alternative to cut and fold...

Thank you. I had seen that before, but frankly, had forgotten about his method. I'm open to that if I can get it to work with the Napier, but I'm worried they'll need that extra material folded out of the way to match up with existing body lines. At any rate, thanks for the reminder! One additional option to throw into the mix. :)

The slotted tool and forming approach may have been my thread. I'm often trying to push the envelope and build stuff just a little bit nicer than has been done before.

To be fair, I got the idea from the youtube series "Project Binky" which is probably my favorite youtube build in existence.

Cheers,

That came out quite nice! I suspect you needed to massage the metal quite a bit. Nice thing about your method is that you eliminated all the sharp edges.
I may use your method. Thanks :wave1:
