Upside down steering wheel

Hi everyone,

I spent the day tinkering with my Jeep. I had decided, some time ago, that I wanted to install a new PS pump and new steering gear. So, today I did.

Old parts came out relatively easily.

New parts went in somewhat easily.

I then centered the steering gear by turning it (by hand, on its input shaft) to full lock, then the other way. 3 turns from lock to lock.

So, logically, center MUST be at 1.5 turns.

Only problem is: The steering wheel is upside down in that position.

How does one SAFELY disconnect the airbag?

You just need to adjust your drag link. You do not need to remove your steering wheel.

The front wheels point straight ahead, the gear and Pittman arm are centered.

Sounds like you flipped the steering shaft. Happened to me, I pulled the shaft apart when I pulled my gearbox, and when I put it back in I put it 180* upside down.

I was wondering about that.... the steering shaft has not been apart, only been pulled back from the input shaft.

If the steering shaft can be pulled apart then that does seem like the simplest way to flip it 180 degrees

I had a brain wave:

On the old steering gear, it’s input shaft has a flat spot which points UP when the gear is centered

On the new gear, the same flat spot points DOWN when centered

The gears are not identical in other words.

Today I pulled the steering wheel. It, too, is keyed so it only fits one way.

This unfortunately means that the only way forward will be to get yet another steering gear, hopefully this time one which is set up correctly

Isnt the steering shaft just a square? I thought you could pull it apart , rotate one end 180* and be back in business

Not on my rig sadly.....

Good news is the vendor accepted the gear as a return and issued a full refund
