Minimum air compressor size

Looking to get a air compressor but cant afford alot right now. I would be using it with an hammer wrench and sprayer for work on my XJ and other vehicles. I have been looking at a CH 6.5 hp 28 gallon vertical tank for about $270. Is it better to have a horizontal or vertical tank?

The most important thing is the CFM (or SCFM) rating of the compressor. That's Cubic Foot per Minute. Take a look at all the air tools you may possibly want to get either now or in the near future and check their CFM requirements (and at what pressure) and compare that to the compressor(s) output rating. There are usually two different CFM ratings for a compressor. One will be a a low pressure and one will be for a higher pressure. Like this Sears compressor's rating for example: SCFM Delivery At 40 psi 8.6 SCFM / SCFM Delivery At 90 psi 6.4 SCFM

As far a horizontal and vertical ...... as far as I know that's just a personal preference call. I like the compactness of a horizontal.

Have fun

if you can find one at a slight angle that would be optimum

Don't buy and oiless compressor and the HP rating is pretty well crap anymore. Mines rated at 3HP and it's 220V only and it pulls around 15 amps at that.

Watch the CFM's. Unless your painting or running die grinders a lot almost anything around 20 gallons will work fine unless you just can't run the chance of having to wait a few minutes.

Horizontal or vertical doesn't matter. If you put it in a corner the verticles usually fit better and the horizontals fit better under benches.

This is a Puma (chicago label):

Cambel with a good compressor:

Sanborns are good too:

I like IR's:
