I'm close to diving in and regearing my 8.25 and d30 myself and don't wanna screw it up.I'm looking for a good writeup or guide to study so I don't make any avoidable mistakes.

IIRC, the Factory Service Manual has a really good section on gear setup. And it's just a really good set of documentation, period.

And no, we will not be posting the section from the FSM, or links to it, due to copyright infringement.

You may have to take it all apart and put it back together again a number of times but time spent getting it right now will ensure a long happy life for your gears.

Re: step by step gearing writeup or link?

BillaVista did a great job with these

For the 14 bolt

Dana style axles

The real pain with DIY regearing is the initial investment in tools. Dial type in/lb torque wrench, a shop press, among others.

Does anyone else have experience regearing using some other tools or methods that could cut that cost down??

Re: step by step gearing writeup or link?

I use a beam type torque wrench for preload. It cost me $28. I also made my own setup bearings. I honed the insides with a brake hone.

I used this one on here.

You have an 8.25 so yours will be slightly different. You'll need to buy or make this tool.
