What did you call my Jeep???!!!

"The Jeep Cherokee may have been a clunky relic, but that didn't stop some loyalists from scoffing at its shapely replacement. Too cutesy, went the refrain. But the Liberty promptly soared to the top of the sales charts, and for good reason.

The Liberty isn't cute, it's handsome, a standout among bland or gawky rivals. It remains every inch a Jeep, as it proved by fording steep-banked streams, climbing boulders and churning the red Virginia mud of Camp Jeep's grueling off-road trails. Towing capacity tops the class. But the Liberty cleans up nicely, with a composed highway ride and a well-designed interior with loads of cargo space. The beefy steel-reinforced chassis puts the Jeep on the chubby side, taking a toll on fuel economy. But where some cute-utes feel toylike, the Jeep feels substantial."

What do you expect from a left wing propaganda mill; the TRUTH?

Calling CNN a "left wing propaganda mill" is about what you'd expect from an inbred hillbilly redneck, not someone who frequents computer forums. A couple of other networks may qualify as leaning a bit left, but CNN (and Fox)? Not hardly. Sorry for the thread hijack but I couldn't ignore that one.

Fox? Certainly one of the more balanced news orgs out of the bunch. CNN? Maybe they aren't the most leftist-leaning network, but they certainly lean left. I've witnessed so many examples of their leftist views that my view on this is non-negotiable.

Can you say "Jane Fonda" .
When the trails are cut for the jeep jambos one of the most desired tests is to see if a liberty can run the trails, if not the trails are smoothed out, not good for customer relations if those new libertys won't cut it.
Did you know that a MB Diesel station wagon will out ramp a liberty :D

Lord knows the Liberty has taken abuse here at NAXJA!

I test-drove one last November. My '00 XJ's lease was running up (since extended), and I wanted to see what it had to offer. Truth be told, my VW Jetta has been farther offroad than my Jeep... so off-road prowess wasn't my goal.

The Liberty has a bit more rear seat room. At a great loss of cargo room. The ride feels tipsy and topheavy... coming out of a Cherokee. I think the springs are just too soft for that tall vehicle. The step-in height is TALLER than a standard Cherokee, even though the ground clearance is less. Those items, combined with the piggish weight gain (800 lbs more than a Cherokee?), and the fact that my XJ needed $600 in work before I could end the lease (cracked windshield, new tires, and a couple of minor details) turned me off. And a $100-more lease payment.

I paid my $600 to fix the Cherokee... and happily kept it for another 18 months. I'm probably buying it outright at the end of the new lease.

Ted Turner sucks, He favors world gov't and has donated billions of dollars to the united nations. I guess it's easy for someone with more money than God to think socialism is a good thing.

Dan

BTW Ted Turner owns CNN in case you didn't know.

AOL/Time Warner owns CNN, Turner is the channel founder and has an honorary seat on the board and has about as much influence over the content of the channel as Jane does (meaning nada). My comment, which was as completely out of place here as this one is, (and again I apologize for that) is that the content is not as liberal as other network news channels. Look at the editorial board of AOL/Time Warner to see who's really pulling the strings at CNN.

Bwahahahahaha! I bet they didn't get one anywhere near CJ5 hill
(though I didn't get up it on my own either :dunno: maybe next year)

I guess that Hillary AND the U.N. are middle of the road.

What's wrong with a hillbilly redneck??!!NAXJA member#579 southeast chapter

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I got a cool hat someplace that might go well with that, but unfortunately I think that it doesn't look rednekish enough....

My clunky old relic handles waaaaaay better then the KJ.... I test drove one to get a free jeep chair (believe me... it was worth it... thatchar iis sweet )
but anyways.... as I was saying the KJ handles funky (top heavy and a bit squirly) and it had no pickup...... I tried the 3.7 version (auto) and it was terrible accelerating from the stop light. My XJ with 3.07's and 235's did a LOOOOT better.

Gotta give some props to the KJ, It sure isn't an XJ but look at the competition! did you see the runner up?

Ok this is pretty good but there are a few things, As a trail guide for jeep jambos and camp jeep I protest the coment "When the trails are cut for the jeep jambos one of the most desired tests is to see if a liberty can run the trails, if not the trails are smoothed out" Wether or not a libby can make dosent make a dam bit of diffrece to us If they cant make it we'll drag them through. I ddi see quite a few libbys on the trails at camp jeep and some of them were running the harder trails. during a late run on friday we were at CJ5 hill that had been reworked at the bottom to make it easier a libby on 31 made it up when 2 XJs with 31s didn't Now who knows about drivers ability and all but when the libby was comming up it bottomed out the front end and hit something soild underneath and i ened up saying the words you never thought you'd hear at a jeep event" I think he hit his a- arm on the rocks" after i said that i looked around and said i can't belive i said that witch brought out some pretty good laughs. do i like the libby? not realy but not much i can do about them eccept drag them through the trails.

It has taken a little pounding, but the admins have kept it pretty well under control. JU, on the other hand...

I used to frequent the Liberty Forum over at JU (fur the entertainment value, mind you). I watched the threads on there for most of the first year of its existence, and what little KJ bashing goes on here has absolutely nothing on the dawn of that forum. After all, the Dillinger-Remedy skirmishes weren't conferred "legendary" status for nothing...

Myself, I don't care for the Liberty. I tried one once (back in summer of 2001), and I agree with your feeling on the ride - it felt top-heavy to me too. Power seemed ok, but I thought my XJ (a '92 with 170K on the clock at the time) could take it. Some folks might like it - that's fine with me. If they like it, they can have it. No skin off my nose. I'll stick with my XJ.

That being said, it's nice to see a Jeep taking top honors in an SUV class. I only wish they hadn't had to bash its predecessor in the process. I felt that was a bit in poor taste. After all, they call the XJ's boxy look clunky, while no doubt all the while proclaiming the virtues of the just-as-boxy H2.

Taste is fickle. Style is everlasting.

I am gonna go against the grain on this fellas....I own a Liberty(and an XJ) and the only thing i DON'T like about it is the seats are a little hard. It has good power and is not the least bit "squirly." Several of you have referred to the XJ as a "flying brick." Now don't get me wrong I love my XJ and it is very reliable. We got quite a bit of snow here in Va not to long ago and the liberty handled WAAAAAAY better in the snow than my XJ. My xj was the one that was squirly in the snow. The Liberty is my wifes DD and i would trust it more than i than i would my xj if it came down to getting her in or out of problems. A bone stock KJ can out run a stock XJ. Opinons are like A$$ holes.....everyone has one......and this one is mine!

Them's fighting words :D

Actually I wouldn't mind finding two stock vehicles (similar: manual tranny, 3.7 and 4.0 respectively, both low/similar mileage and so on) and setting them against each other with two unbiased drivers, flipping the drivers so that each one races each vehicle once... and see what results come out of it :D
