BLM Schedules Public Meetings to Prepare Draft EIS

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has scheduled five public scoping
meetings to gather public comments and recommendations on the
preparation of a draft environmental assessment (EA) and proposed
amendment to the 1980 California Desert Conservation Area Plan to
designate vehicle routes outside the two Desert Wildlife Management
Areas (DWMAs) within the Northern and Eastern Mojave (NEMO) planning
area.

Each meeting will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the
following dates and locations:

Monday, May 5

PFF Bank and Trust
57251 29 Palms Highway
Yucca Valley, CA

Wednesday, May 7

BLM Office
4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive
Las Vegas, NV

Monday, May 12
Tecopa Community Center
Tecopa Hot Springs Road
Tecopa, CA

Tuesday, May 13

Kerr-McGee Center
100 West California Ave.
Ridgecrest, CA

Thursday, May 15

Legion Hall
Highway 395
Independence, CA

Written comments will be accepted through Friday, May 16, 2003.
Comments should be mailed to the Bureau of Land Management, Attn:
Roxie Trost, 2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, California 92311. Upon
completion of the EA and decision processes, BLM will issue a
decision record that will amend the 1980 California Desert
Conservation Area Plan.

BLM released the NEMO Plan Amendment and Final Environmental Impact
Statement in August 2002 and a record of decision in December 2002,
which in part designated routes only within the DWMAs. Upon
completion of the EA and decision process BLM will designate routes
of travel throughout the reminder of the planning area, which
encompasses 2.7 million acres of BLM-managed public lands in eastern
San Bernardino and Inyo counties and the far eastern edge of Mono
County.

For more information contact Roxie Trost at (760) 252-6020.
