it is a 96 4.0 140K. I pulled the reley and then put it back in and it works now? It was getting 230ish. do you think it was a dirty terminal? if not what could it be?
Well 230* is definitely too hot for the fan not to kick on. If it's working now, try making a mental note of what temp. it is when it comes on. For a '96 it should be 217* at the coolant temp. sensor (not necessarily what it reads on the dash). I don't really know what else it could be--bad coolant temp. sensor? But check to see if it really is working correctly now. If it is, I'd get some Ox Guard (dialectric grease) and put some on the relay's terminals to keep them from oxidizing too much.
