Some pretty interesting background on what Harlan County was like back in the coal mining days. The county we are fixing to visit has a very bloody and violent past. These clips gave me an interesting perspective on what the residents of this county had to fight for. It made me stop and think a little, and a result, hope that it helps me appreciate the area when I am there. It is certainly food for thought. If you don't want to watch all of them, at least watch the trailer, 3 links down:

Here is a clip about 2 minutes long with images of Harlan County KY during the miners strikes (1930s and 1970s) and trying to develop a union.

Here is a 5 minute clip interview with a documentary filmmaker that did a move about the Harlan miners strike. This movie won the plenty of awards in 1976 and was put into the Library of Congress in the early '90s.

The town of Harlan is very pro coal. You will see signs all around town saying "Coal keeps the lights on in Harlan" or "this view brought to you by coal mining" (we will see that view on my ride).

They are also very pro-four wheeling. They like the money it brings in to the community.

Also the FX show "Justified" is set in Harlan, KY.

Harlan County USA is a very good documentary on it. The town looks a liiiiiiiiiittle different now.

You can buy it for $12 shipped off eBay or Amazon. I was thinking about getting it just to see the whole thing. I watched the YouTube preview Cottontail posted that showed footage of people holding guns and trying to drive in and out of the mines. Scary stuff.

Have you seen the movie Flexd?

Yup, Its on Netflix. Its crazy how it used to be down there! I'd need a bigger gun back in the 70's!

When did you see it? I was just wondering if this thread promped you to see it or something else.

Actually i watched it before the crawl last year! :D I'd heard about it from a friend.

I ordered the DVD Harlan County, USA off eBay a week before the Crawl. I asked my wife what was taking so long since it was a California address for the seller. Well we find out that it isn't supposed to arrive until July 19th. WTF? Sellers address has changed to some stupid place in FRICKIN' CHINA!

I should have ordered it from Hastings here in the Boro, it would have cost twice as much but I'd already have it and be able to take it back if something happens to be wrong with it.

Maybe I'll get to see it before next years event.

Video showed up today. Yea!
