Oil filter housing question

Can't seem to find an answer on this. Have 98 xj swapping motor from 91. Noticed the oil filter housing is cracked on the 91. Are the vertical and horizontal housings interchangeable?
 
You can also run a Ford type filter (Fram PH8 equivalent) for more filtration. I've been doing this for over 20 years.
 
I was reading some where that they can be changed or you can just change the threaded part that the filter screws to and the use the new filter or the larger ford filter witch I would do it can filter more stuff out of the oil and being larger it adds a little more oil to the system .
