Rear axle swap

I have been reading all the questions on rear axle swaps, people using ford 8.8 and dana 44. There was a post also on the dodge 9.25, has any body thought of the Chrysler 8 3/4. They are very common in older mopars and I have one from a 66 plymouth its 60 inches drum to drum 4.10 suregrip. What is the width of the xj rear drum to drum? Just thinking with a spring perch change it might work. And its alot stronger than the 8.25 or dana 35.

You can get L/S's, spools, even a Detroit for the ChryCo 8 3/4. Gearing is widely varied, although not as much as the Ford 9"(but, then again, how many htorods/trucks,etc... have used the 9" over the years?). Try talking to either Moser or Strange about shafts, but I think that they are comparitively priced as the "other" axles. One to keep in mind when ordering gears is which pinion gear the drop out is cut for, as there are two castings. I do not remember the numbers right now, unfortunately. Hope that this helps.

There are 3 castings 741, 742 and 489. Only the 742 and 489 are worth using. As was said there is alot of aftermarket support for this rear, gears, spools, posi and locker plus axles from most all. Also mopar sells a alumium 742 center section.

there was a thread about this very thing about 5 months back, it had a listing of what axles were of suitable bolt pattern and WMS width.
Something to search for.

wow, it was farther back than I thought.
Good find. I didn't put too uch effort into that one :)

I currently have a 8.75 in my garage that is destined for my XJ. It came out of a 69 Satellite and is within 1/2" of the width of my 35. Like hemihead said, go with the 742 or the 489 case. It will be stamped on the drivers side of the casing. I went with the 742 as I like the straight pinion and shim setup better than the tapered pinion and crush sleeve in the 489. The pinion shaft is bigger than a 9" and I believe the axle is just better all around. There is a range of gear choices and Drive Train Specialists seems to have the best selection. Mine is getting 4.86 gears and a Detriot, otherwise, it is getting stock replacement parts. I would not worry about the shafts as they are 30 spline and seem to be beefy. Keep in mind, these axles were run in full sized cars behind the big block motors, except for the Hemi which got the Dana 60.
