replacing d30 seals

short of using a long broom stick for removal and install of the seals are there any other tricks worth knowing ?

You're talking about the pinion seal?
I got frustrated and tore it all to heck with a screwdriver. The new one tapped in nicely with a rubber mallet.

Oops, I should have been more specific: the axleshaft seals.

I got a piece of solid 1/2" rod about 4ft. from the hardware store. I use it to drive the old seals out, and with an appropriate socket and 1/2" ext. to drive them in. The rod fits fairly tight in the extension, and you can beat on it without wrecking your extension. That along with my axle tube scraper I made make it a fun job.

Ask Scott (Clean RC) at the M&G on Thursday. He did my seals for me.
