how much interest in a NAXJA sponsored Mohawk Madness run on labor day weekend??

sidriptide

nobody of any consequence
i know there are alot of NAC (and beyond) members who wheel but i never seem to see any of you guys up here when we do a run.... the mohawk trail area is basically the northwest area of massachusetts and the adjacent area in vermont... there are tons of roads and trails out there for ALL levels of rig and driver ability.... who would be interested? wheeling, camping, and B/Sing for a weekend....

btw did you ever go back and make it the rest of the way up that trail to the top of **** Hill?

not since we went thru there... it was basically a stocker run from the other end i wil be back up in that area in a few weeks and thats one of my objectives.. find the summit of "the dome" and see what the trail is like...

well this is a promising.. i am working with Eagle to jump thru the proper hoops so we can get a whole forum to plan it and such... do a search in this forum for "MOHAWK MADNESS" and read the discussion it will give you some basic info on this.. we will be camping up at a state forest in the north adams area and there is everything from dirt roads thru the woods to totally nasty rock infested mud trails.. the actual trails will not be decisded until we know who is showing but between earle and i we knkow enough to spend days on end out there.... i will post some links to pictures from that area to give you an idea what its all about... the area we will be in is about 2.5 hrs from the boston area... not far at all considering what there is to offer

just joined the forum, i'd be up for the ride

I'd be down if i had all the proper hardware... i have no tow hooks, cb, etc... aren't these all needed if it is to be a NAXJA sponsored ride? Please correct me if i'm wrong, which I hope I am.

CB's are not required but are "highly recommended".
Tow hooks with the appropriate load spreading brackets on the front ARE mandatory. You can usually get them used for ~$50 usually or new for ~$75 from Rusty's or C4x4 and they only take like 30 minutes to install.
I've seen the shackles used as tow points on the rear, but I don't know what the official word is for rear tow points, I have a class III hitch with a D-ring receiver that works great.

Also required are:
tow strap with loops (no metal)
fire extinguisher
full size spare

It's all stuff that you will use at some point, except hopefully the fire extinguisher, if not for yourself then for the guy in front of or behind you :sunshine:

Well, we'll have to see how the funding goes...i have the class IV hitch, i'll get an insert for the d-ring. As for the spare... i don't have it... i hate donuts so i tossed it long ago. The stealership stripped off the tow hitch and spare 16" alloy when it came back from lease. I want to get another just haven't thought of it when i had $$. Also, i have no extinguisher or straps... I'd love to come, but we'll see how my funds pan out... I am waiting to start my new job and get put on payrole... so i'm backed up with bills now. I'll see what i can do- Hope to see you all on the trail. --Chad--

IMHO a 2" front reciever is the way to go on an XJ... i just dont like the brackets for tow hooks.. quadratec has a receiver for like $90 from hidden-hitch but i dont like how low it hangs.. i spent another $50 getting it modified.. my other rig has a front hitch from draw-tite and its much heavier construction and does not hang any lower than the front valence panel below th ebumper.... it cost $139 but i like it better... i recall pricing a bracket/hook kit from rusty's (i think ) and it was like $150.... the reciever is much more versatile so i chose that.... and the rear shackles ARE NOT acceptable for recovery.. i understand the "funds" issue but the basic saftey stuff is required to "play"... if you can at all get it together it will be well worth the effort... hope we get a good turn out for this... you won't be disappointed...

Real tow points are one of the things we check for first and most seriously. Front can be hooks (with brackets, no bolting direct to the unibody) or a receiver hitch. Rear can be a hook (again, with appropriate bracketry, not direct to the unibody) or a Class II or III hitch with D-ring. Aftermarket bumpers incorporating receivers and/or D-rings are also acceptable.

Using the rear shackles is absolutely NOT acceptable.

Tow hooks welded to anything are not acceptable. (Welding makes forgings brittle, which is not a good thing in a tow hook.)

Fire extinguishers are cheap. You can pick up a dry chem extinguisher in Wal-Mart for less than 10 clams. You should have one anyway.

First aid kit is also required. The rules don't say how big, but it really should be more than just a box of bandaids.

If you have a winch on either end, that satisfies the tow point requirement for that end.

For stockers, if I know ahead of time I can probably provide a "loaner" spare tire or three. I have several sets of tires and rims here in sizes ranging from 215/75 to 235/75.

If you jump to the Events section of the NAXJA forums, I believe the safety rules and equipment requirements were posted somewhere in the NAC Fest 2004 forum. For the most part, it's what I just listed.

NAXJA events are open to NAXJA members. Each member may invite a guest, and the rules don't require that the guest drive an XJ so if a member wants to invite a bud who drives a Blazer, that's allowed.

However, as a NAXJA event it is not an "open" event, which means it will not be posted on other boards and it is not open to just any Ford or bowtie driver who shows up. There has been discussion on the national BOD forum regarding whether or not any one member can invite more than one guest. The way I view it, the rules require that the host be responsible for his/her guest, and if that guest is a royal PITA and is asked to leave the group, for safety the host is asked to leave also, as escort. To me, that says if you bring four friends, when any one of them screws up they ALL get the boot, because otherwise they are in the group without a host.

So for NAC events, at least until the end of my term as Pres, it's "One member/one guest." (One guest vehicle, that is.) The next chapter BOD may decide to change that next year, as they deem appropriate.

For XJ/MJ owners who are not NAXJA members, we allow you to attend two events to check us out. After that, if you don't want to join you may not attend NAC Chapter events. Other chapters may view that differently but we think that's fair. However, XJ/MJ owners who are not NAXJA members are not entitled to invite guests unless the guests are also XJ/MJ owners who are prospective members.

Clear as mud, right?
