4x4 shifter lever assembly inside Jeep

I have a '95 XJ Sport 4WD. Does anyone know if the shifter handle itself needs a cotter pin at the end of it to hold it in place? The lever itself popped out and I had to reinsert it into the transfer case linkage coming up from the undercarriage. There was a spring that stabilized the top of it, but I'm curious as to what the small hole at the bottom end that goes into the linkage is for? It seems to me a cotter pin would hold it in place and avoid it popping out like it did. Google search was no help so I thought I'd turn to this forum. I wish I could upload a photo for visual aid but I can't. I'm hoping someone here knows what I'm trying to describe. TIA.

It's for a cotter key or hair-pin clip.
