Anyone familiar with older steering boxes?

I have run into a minor problem with my steering conversion in my rhd xj. The gemmer box ( model 24jc04) off of an unknown year of dj, has a straight pitman arm and of course ours has 3 inches of drop. I figured my pitman arm would fit since the splines looked the same but alas, the gemmer is just a slightly smaller diameter. I see that I can get dropped arms for cjs but there is a year split from 75 to 76 and that should be the Era this box is from. Anyone know which arm to get?

No answer for you.
I didn't know what a Jeep DJ or a Gemmer box was, now I do.
Thanks Google.
Good luck with your search.

Anyone else who is curious, gemmer is a brand that made steering boxes alongside Saginaw and a dj is the dispatcher jeep, a rhd cj for postal service. Rhd stuff is hard to find here in the states and frankensteining two different rhds adds extra problems. Everything else is figured out just this pitman arm is tripping me up. It should be the same as a lhd cj I was just hoping someone knew which pitman arm might fit. If I don't figure it out I will probably try and bend the straight factory one after the 4th.

Do not do that, it will severely weaken the arm.

Wouldn't it be better to get one from each side of the split, then compare to the original to see which fits and return the one that doens't?

It would but, the parts stores around here not only don't carry it, but can't get it; so I would have to order both, then ship the other one back, pay restocking fees etc. Anyone know a good cj forum?

I may have it figured out, looks like manual boxes had a smaller output shift, the only difference between years is the clocking of splines. Zooming in on the pics online it looks like mine is the post 75 model so I orders the dropped arm for it, ill let you know how it turns out.

I don't know what your conversion is trying to achieve, if it's a RHD upgrade or converting to or from LHD. If you are looking for a replacement RHD steering box they are still available in the USA.

Used RHD XJ parts are getting hard to source in the United Kingdom but WG (Austrian made WJ's) are still reasonably easy to find. If you need help finding a RHD steering box in the UK and getting it shipped to the US send me a PM.
