Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

I bought the LEDs and the switches from Frys, and I just need to find some time to build a patch harness for you and I'll come and install it.

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

So I have a 98 TCM that I'm testing with currently, I drove around for a day and no codes so far, I'll drive it around for a few weeks and report back my findings.

Edit, I also noticed I never posted the my schematic in this thread.

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

The real test will be if you keep it mostly in 2 and 3 around town, romp on it a decent amount, switch between the two while doing so. Basically drive it in anger while using 2nd and 3rd and eventually something will happen, it was fine for me till I did that. I found that the TCU wanting to be in 2 and me wanting to be in 3 or vice versa was most likely to cause a CEL.

How are you testing the 98 TCU without having a 4 pulse/rev VR-type OSS installed, or the 97 TCU without having a 1 pulse/rev reed switch OSS installed? Or are you using the converter circuit lawsoncl posted when testing the 97 TCU?

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

My rig a 99 so a 98 TCU is plug and play, I haven't been able to test a 97 TCU yet. I have a 97 TCU, but the connector is different than the 98-01 TCUs. If I wanted to test a 97 TCU I can use a dakota digital box to adjust the PPM of the OSS to make it work.

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

2 Questions:

Could you elaborate on how to add the resistors? On my '00 I cut the solenoid wires on the existing TCU harness and routed them to a On/Off/On switch, and then wired in rail shifter. Would I add the resistors inline from the wires going to the TCU from the switch so it keeps it from tripping? I don't think I have a clear understanding based on your pictures.

Also, how do you add an LED to let you know when the rail shifter is in use?

Thanks!

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

The resistors are bridged between the solenoid outputs on the TCU and ground. I drew up a schematic of how I had everything wired up.

https://www.facebook.com/download/71...%20Shifter.pdf

As for adding an LED to indicate when the shifter is in use, since the switch it in my line of sight I can just glance down and see if the switch is up or down and that's how I know if the shifter is in use. If you wanted to do something like that you'd probably want to do a 3 pole switch and use the 3rd pole to switch power going to the shifter and add an LED onto that.

Darn, it says the link doesn't work. Any chance you could make a screenshot of it and paste it here? That would be really helpful!

That's awesome!! So basically you just splice them in and take each to a ground. That's super easy. Thank you!

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

Since it's been awhile since I've updated this thread, I figured I'd give everyone an update and let them know the mods are still working great and I recently installed a transgo hd2 kit in my trans. That alone really woke things up, my trans will now bark the tires of the 1-2 shift.

I also noticed I never added the part number for the TCU connectors and pins to this thread, so here are the part numbers for a 98-01 TCU.

Here is the TCU side connector

Here is the mating side connector

Here are the big pins, you need 10

Here are the smaller pins, you need 16

Re: D.I.Y. RAD Rock+Rail shifter install with no CEL on a 99

Since there is some questions asking about the TCU connector part numbers, here we go.

Here is a 97 TCU

TCU Side
178811-1 Natural Color
178811-6 Gray (Factory Color)
178811-6 Yellow Color

Mating Connector
6-917992-6 Light Gray Color
917992-7 Yellow
917992-6 Dark Gray (Factory Color)
917992-5 Blue
917992-2 Black
917992-1 White

The pins and pin count are the same part numbers for the 97 and the 98-01

Pins for both the 97 and the 98-01 harness side connectors.

175269-1 x10 (Larger outer pins)
175265-1 x26 (Smaller inner pins)
