Re: Trailer mods

I got all the welding done on the frame (except the tongue) and started on tweaking all the springs hangers in to place.

Re: Trailer mods

I haven't received my coupler yet but I started mocking up the tongue to determine the length and because I need the angles to miter both the 4" channel and the 2"x4"x.188 tube.

Re: Trailer mods

It's time to get back to work, I just received my Bulldog hitch (2-5/16" ball/12,5000 lb). I couldn't meet the 50* A-frame design so I went with the 3" straight coupler.

Re: Trailer mods

Yesterday got slowed way down by my decision on how to mate up the tube with the channel. I was originally going to miter everything and use weld plates (fast/easy), but I decided to cope the joints instead (long/tedious).

Re: Trailer mods

Long and tedious tends to be the key to a better end result.

Nice work.

What is the plan for a finish on this?

Re: Trailer mods

If your asking about paint, it will be Rustoleum for sure but I'm thinking about Hammertone gray!

Re: Trailer mods

I got the basic frame done (still a couple of small things to do), but then I will flip it over and start on the top with the keyholes(6), diamond plate and all the coupler/tongue work. Can't say what I'll get done this week as we're headed for the Rubicon!

Re: Trailer mods

I was wondering if you were going to go whole hog and have it hot dipped.

A cousin of mine did that on a trailer he built. Given how trailers are typically treated it is a great way to go if you can afford it.

Re: Trailer mods

Early on I did think about powder coating! Living in AZ means no rust although we did give a "rat rod" look a thought to with just some satin clear after some applied patina.

Re: Trailer mods

That is a good point. With your location there probably isn't much point to an expensive finish. You could leave it bare and your grandkids could still pass it on to another generation or two.

Re: Trailer mods

I got back from the Rubicon late last night, it appears we got more rain at home than on the mountain! I did receive my hanger kit and will get my fenders today. In the mean time I got the surface rust cleaned off the top rails and coated with galvi-prime and started mocking up the tongue.

Re: Trailer mods

A new problem, I received my fenders yesterday (took 6 weeks to get them) and I don't like the fit. I've already ordered a new set but that leaves me with working on small stuff (no decking) until I get them!

Re: Trailer mods

Yesterday I got the holes for the ramps cut out and the last 2 crossmembers welded in along with trimming the tongue to length. I also mounted the axles to get them centered and weld the perches on.

Re: Trailer mods

Not going to get much more done until I get fenders but the tires/wheels are on, axle perches are welded and bolted on plus I got 6 chain key-holes welded in. Headed to the lake for 4 days and wait patiently!
