Re: Trailer mods
The u-bolts that came with the axles are to short for my spring packs (8 leaves)so as soon as my spring shop opens I will run down there and have them make me a new set.

Re: Trailer mods
Those guys are great, been dealing with them for 50yrs and they bent up a new set (1-1/4" longer) in under 15minutes!

Re: Trailer mods
I didn't get as much done as I wanted but I needed the lift for 2 jobs this weekend (clutch on a friends Subaru and a stolen cat on my sisters CRX). I had to modify the spring plates as my leaves are 2" vs the std 1-3/4" but I did get the brakes installed plus a couple of tires to move it and also check my new width so I can determine how much to widen the frame rails.

Re: Trailer mods
This project just took a turn toward "Expensive". I wasn't finding any parts for my old suspension, so after ordering a new kit with all new leaves and hangers I have decided to build from scratch. I have a massive steel order in and will completely abandon the old frame entirely.

Re: Trailer mods
Ouch!
Steel hasn't exactly been affordable lately.

Re: Trailer mods
There isn't a "right" time but steel prices are not predicted to come down. The bad part is that will have to borrow a trailer to p/u my order when I could have used mine if it wasn't all cut apart for no reason now!

Re: Trailer mods
Even worse will be if you sit down and calculate the cost of building your own and then compare it to the cost of just purchasing a new trailer.

Re: Trailer mods
I already did but since I "opened the door" and stepped in early, my investment was already heavy so I was committed by then!

Re: Trailer mods
Just paid the invoice, not to bad at $1600 for 4pcs of 4" channel, 1 pc of 2x4x.188, 1 pc of 2x3x.120, and 2 sheets of 1/8" diamond plate.

Re: Trailer mods
I got a clue as to about how much the trailer will weigh, I'm not going to use it all (I needed the length) but the loading weight was 1041lbs.

Re: Trailer mods
I got lucky, they had the load already on a truck for delivery to the shop so I talked them into dropping at the house instead!

Re: Trailer mods
To be honest, everything is expensive nowadays. Atleast you are sure that it is of good quality because of its price.

Re: Trailer mods
Like a lot of projects "it's 2 steps forward, and one step back". Sunday I cut the pieces that I could to get started with pre-priming (weldable) and some lay-out work based on what I had drawn up. I then realized that I hadn't accounted for wanting to move the axles forward 6", so back to the drawing board!

Re: Trailer mods
I've got material orders coming in everyday but I am getting going. Got the welding jig out and started tacking it all together.
