My XJ adventures with the RTT

Figured I'd start a thread in this section since it'll probably stick around for a while for my infrequent updates

Just took delivery of my Cascadia RTT from Bobby at CVT. Very happy with the product so far. Instructions could use some work but figuring out the assembly is part of the fun NAXJA

Prepare to get accosted by a lot of lookieloo's in every campground you go to. Everyone always wants to come and ask questions about it. I noticed this a lot more when my tent was on the jeep. Now that it's on a trailer people don't seem to notice as much.

Guilty...

Tough to find beaches to drive on in New England. I love the pictures.
No kidding. This is Duxbury beach (non-resident permit 295/yr). They just re-opened it thanks to everyone's favorite plover.
Some beaches down the cape (sandy neck) are cheaper but farther to get to...
I still haven't found a beach that allows both vehicles and tent camping. The ones that allow tent camping don't allow vehicles, and the ones that allow vehicles require self-contained units :bs:

I only know of the cape cod national seashore and block island during the summer. During the fall a few more open up like down on the RI shore and Plum Island. Haven't heard of one yet that allows tenting.

Building a 9 ft crane to pluck the tent from the roof... sucks I only have a 7 ft door :viking: Up to about about $500 so far including the harbor freight hoist, pair of ladders, and misc hardware + lumber... but when it's done it'll be sweeeeeeet lol. Majority of the "crane" parts are stuff I needed anyway that's multi-purpose... hoist, clamps, straps, etc

Just finished crane construction this weekend. Couple small details to iron out but the concept as a whole is operational :viking:

Had to ditch the strap idea and build a lifting frame out of 2x4s... the straps stretched too much and put stress on the tent when under load
With the 2x4 lifting frame and a little extra clearance, I now have plenty of space to get the jeep in and out

Well it's done... 300C and the Challenger are gone :(

The fleet's back down to 4, with the addition of the new 2014 JKUR... the wife's DD. Now do I pick up a Garvin rack and put the RTT on the JK??? What a dilemma...

Killer roof top setup!

Thanks Jeff, nothing too special about it

September XJ update -
Cut out and patched up the rotted pass rocker, Por-15'd, seam sealed, primed + painted other misc rust and bedline'd the rear bumper, lower doors, and rockers.

Just made a nice trip up north with a buddy, past the white mtns to check on his family cabin and punch some holes in some targets, lots of work and fun

Did you pack the chainsaw? Uh....

IMG_0233.JPG

Looks like we're getting rid of this the old fashioned way

IMG_20130928_131928_263.jpg

Luckily it was partially rotted so it didn't take too long to chop through

Once again the tent worked great, dog and I slept like logs

Sadly I forgot to take a picture of the view before we were socked-in

Some pics of the trail on the way out... on the way in you're always too excited to stop for a shot
