Re: Very Sad News Today....

Indeed a very shocking news. He sent me his latest photos just a month ago. He was full of life.

Rest in peace Lion. You will be greatly missed. I will always think of you when I pick up a camera.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Ethan and I always had a great time when he was around. We will miss him. Godspeed my friend.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

I just received this email from a friend of Lion's:

----------------------------------------------------

Hi, I'm sending you this note because you are a friend of Lion, (Kent
Nelson).
(Or maybe I made a mistake, in which case- Sorry!)
I probably have your email address because Lion sent us both the same
announcements about his new photos.

We have some sad news. I'm sorry to say that our good friend Lion (Kent
Nelson) has recently left us behind in this world, and passed on. A
friend visited his casa yesterday Wed, March 5th 2008 because he didn't
return phone calls. He apparently departed while sleeping. The police
were notified, and his brother on the east coast. No word yet on when/
where a memorial will be held, but you can bet there will be one. Lion
was a popular guy and for good reason. He was cheerful and didn't have a
mean bone in his body. I've known him since 1994 when I joined the
RoughWheelers.

I've started an internet memorial for our friend here:
http://www.roughwheelers.com/pix/v/lion/
You may add your comments and/or photos. (Please do) Lion always loved
getting comments.

You may know Lion from his thousands of photos at PBase:

It's now a safer world for garlic & broccoli. But we will miss Lion terribly.

Sadly,
Montego

Re: Very Sad News Today....

Thats really a bummer. He was a great guy and will be missed. He was always joking around and full of stories. Kinda reminded me a bit of my grandpa.

This really brought my morning down. There are many better places then this, and i'm sure he's found them now.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

I remember hiking with him to explore points of interest on the trail in Moab and Mohave Road. He always had the outdoor interest.
LION was a considerate guy to Off Road with... and he will be missed.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

A wonderful friend with amazing photos and stories to share with all! We could all learn from him on how to be toward others, he is, and will be sorely missed!

Ever notice that he ALWAYS did his darnedest to get someone's name and post it with their pictures, even when we hoped he'd forget? And always called people by name, if you met him, you were his friend!!!

Even though I feel he was too young, I am glad to know he went in his sleep, and I am sure he was dreaming of his next trip!

One of the reason's most of us only understood half of what it was saying is because the other half was lion...........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Peace on Lion,

Jordan, Ashley and Zachary

I'm in shock! Probably because he was so young at heart,
sub-consciously I just figured he'd live another 80 years or so.

"Lion was a popular guy and for good reason. He was cheerful and

That's an understatement. I've wheeled with Lion a bunch times, he was
such a nice guy and a very interesting character, and I will never
forget him.

He mailed me one of his "green cards" as he called it. A green
business card and a pamphlet of his old business. Lion's Landscaping
or something like that.

He will be missed on the trail by many.

I'm all up for anything. Memorial run, placing a marker for him on the trail, services, going out for a beer in salut afterwards. Let us know if you hear anything more.

Ditto, I just found out, and about 5 minutes later someone told me some great news and was all excited smiling and jumping up and down, and I was like all monotone "ah, that's good"

Re: Very Sad News Today....

I'm thinking an overnighter @ Afton Canyon.

Some wheeling, some hiking, some photography, and polishing off a bottle next to a campfire before crawling on all four back to my tent.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

We should name a trail, road or obstical in his name.

Something in Moab.....Lion's Back maybe?

Or in east county....Lion's Valley Road?

Maybe something in Johnson Valley....Back Door? (you don't want to know why...)

:D

Rick

He would make a point of tracking me down whenever he was in Borrego Springs, I think he was the first member to see my new house....

Re: Very Sad News Today....

lion was a unique and wonderful individual in this world, am i'm darn sure he is gonna be one in the next! i can't even remember how far back i met lion. he was just the kinda person that made you feel you knew him forever from day one! i still rember a calico ride where he came back from doran and i was wondering where his factory tire carrier went, appaerently "it jumped ship!",or sitting in a resturant in moab,or sharing a beer, or a trail, or,or.. i will miss you mr lion, though i am glad to say that though it hurts to know you are gone, it would hurt even more to not have known you................
Godspeed on you next voyage!

Re: Very Sad News Today....

i met him only a few times and enjoyed spending time with him and he will be missed by all who knew him.

God bless you my friend.

Re: Very Sad News Today....

Well this SUCKS !!! He was everywhere... posting picts. from his trips... made me jealous.

I remember sitting at a stop light in a one stoplight town S.E. of me in my work truck... and who drives across infront of me.... Mr. Grrrrrrrrr
I just shook my head & smiled... Lucky Bastard... was coming or going from a trip & I was working...
Makes me wish I'd visited the Rough Wheelers camp in Grave Wash more often... DAMN-IT !!!
LION !!! R.I.P. Brotha !!!

The Mayor....

Re: Very Sad News Today....

I was very sad to hear about this yesterday now. I think I first met Lion June 2002 at a So Cal XJ run and I have been bumping into him over the years here/there at lots of runs. I think the last time I saw him was at the So Cal Fiesta Island Barbeque in Sept. I looked through all my photo albums for photos and uploaded them to the Rough Wheelers link that Eddie posted as well as my FotoTime site. I will post them here. I don't understand how looking at good times can make one so sad.

Wheeler, explorer, photograher, and friend. Vaya con dios Señor Lion
