my xj 2001 fan is always on even on mornings on cold start, temp sensor is new, tjermostat new fan relay new. any ideas? temp gauge is up and down most of the time is down to 0 after 30 or 40 mins of driving

Well both the fan and gauge are controlled by the PCM. I would check for good grounding before anything else.

…. temp gauge is up and down most of the time is down to 0 after 30 or 40 mins of driving

Explain this more completely, the temperature gauge should show about 195*-210 after the engine is warmed up.

Is the Check Engine Light ON ?

Disconnecting the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) makes the PCM turn the e-fan as a fail-safe. I would suspect a faulty CTS, a faulty e-fan relay, or faulty wiring related to the CTS, fan relay, or e-fan.

Is this a new to you XJ or did you do some other work on it and then this started?

also check to make sure you don't have the A/C on, the fan will come on if the AC is on, i don't have a working AC to test if it stays on reguardless of engine temp though. iirc the A/C is on when defrost is selected too in the 00/01

2000/01 the e-fan only turns ON when required, ( a/c or defrost on or off ). 1997-99 the e-fan cycles on/off when a/c or defrost is on. The e-fan always on strongly suggests a faulty CTS, a faulty e-fan relay, or faulty wiring related to the CTS, fan relay, or e-fan
