Hey guys,

Well 2 years, a house, 2 dogs, and a marriage later I have FINALLY taken apart my stoker to diagnose the issues that I had in 2005. For those of you that are really bored and would like the background here are the 2 posts.

So if you read those you'll see that the general concensus is that I blew the head gasket, and or cracked the head / block. Well I took her all down tonight and I really can't find a damn thing wrong visually with anything. I have a TON of pics and have graduated to web albums so here are all 51 of the pics that I took tonight of the engine.

Now I'm no pro at engine stuff, but to me everything looks in order but I would really appreciate your guy's comments on this. My biggest fear is replacing the headgasket and it having the same headgasket type of symptoms all over again.

I spent close to an hour just inspecting everything on both sufaces, the gasket itself, and the inside of the head and block. Everything spins freely and makes no abnormal noises. All the cylinder walls look fine to me. There is on pic that may speak volumes without any visual imperfections on the parts themselves and that is this one:

This kinda shows that there was a leak at some point. If you read the above historical posts you'll see that both my compression tests and my leak down tests pointed their fingers at cylinder 1 and if I'm reading this picture correct that confirms it, but again, my fear is putting it back together and having the same results.

So chime in if you can, I would appreciate it. If you have any questions I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Todd

If the head shows no signs of warpage it's possible that the sealing surface of the block got warped or cracked when you over heated. How badly did it overheat and for how long?
Maybe it's Time to take the block to a machine shop and have it magnafluxed and decked?

Autometer guage was pegged at 250, so I assume hotter than that. Approx 20 minutes at idle.

I owuld have the block Magnafluxed and then decked if it's okay, then do the same for the head....

I would be willing to do it for you if I still worked fro Detroit Diesel, as I was in the 8.2L engine rebuild plant and had FULL access to the machinery....

Whelp I called the engine place today as my warranty it still valid I guess. I finally got a wicked nice guy on the phone by the name of Scott. He asked a few questions and inside of 60 seconds figured out what was wrong. He asked if any of the cylinders were cleaner than the others....Look here:

Um..ya..#1 is crystal clear. He said that I either cracked a cylinder or the piston. So they are going to come next week and get my engine and fix it for me...for free. Pretty happy about that and it will give me time to get the Jeep togther axle wise and stuff. Maybe even do some DREADED body work.

yea but you said you inspected things for an hour.....would'nt you notice the cracked cylinder?
my money is still on a warped block.Pretty cool that you are getting it fixed for free, though.

Not if it's at the bottom or on the side of the piston itself...can't see that stuff. Ya, the warranty is 4 years / 40K miles. Anyone in New England should consider these guys, just ask for Scott I guess. http://marshallsmachine.com/ 207-474-0794. They ship ANYWHERE in New England for FREE.
