My M416 restomod/hole to throw money in

Nice to see you around again.

Looks like good progress on the trailer.

My new axle showed up.

Mocked up the piece of the original frame to mark the holes for the safety chain/lunette fitting bolt.

Drilled some holes and test fit the bolt and brackets.

I ordered axle u bolts. After I mount the axle I need to figure out where the shock mounts are going to be on the frame.

Next is putting the frame and the tub back together and welding the mount tabs and installing the rivnuts to mount the tub to the frame.

what's the weight rating of the trailer axle? Is there a difference between the old one and the new one?

The axles are the same other than one is narrower than the other.

The military trailers are 1/4 ton. I’d have to google to know the axle rating. The hubs are the same from the mbt, m100, the export m101 and the m416. Big bearings and spindles.

I thought about a bunch of different solutions but there’s a joint in GA that has a stack of NOS axles for $125 on ebay. It was the easiest solution to my narrower tub problem.

Is that really the sort of shackle these trailers originally used? Seems odd to me to see shackle on only one side of the leaf spring, wouldn't that put odd stresses on the hanger?

Same design as a Willy’s Jeep, both military and civilian after the war.

The shackle is threaded and the sleeve that goes over it is threaded on the inside and the outside.

I don’t know the exact dates, but m416a1’s were used at least through Vietnam. Same shackle design.

my dads willys has similar shackles...

looking good

Got it back on the tub tonight after I picked up some of my mess.

Mocking up the mount brackets. Original m100 trailer tubs were welded to the frame. I’m going to weld mount tabs to the tub and use rivnuts in the frame rail to mount the tub.

Very similar to the way the later m416 tub is mounted. 6 on each side and 3 on the front and the back.

I finished up 1 side and the back of the frame with rivnuts before I realized I didn’t have any more 3/8” ones.

So I started putting 1/4x20 rivnuts in where I wanted to clamp the 7 wire cable from front to back.

I decided to run the wire on the bottom of the frame rail so I didn’t have to drill more holes in the crossmember.

The cable will run to a 7 wire junction box and then split to two 4 wire cables for the tail lights on each side. The other 3 wires are for whatever I want in the back that needs power, like lights or something.

I’ve owned enough trailers to know that wiring doesn’t last the life of your trailer so I’m planning ahead to replace it when the time comes.

Those junction boxes are a wonderful thing.

I have gone to setting up my trailers with one of those right in the front. That way when the dog gets to hankering for trailer wiring plug again I have an easier job of swapping out that first few feet.

Saweet project man!

I have one for the front that’s going to run the 7 wire connector to the truck. I don’t need 7 wires but it will be nice to have charging power for the trailer batteries when we’re on the move.

Some progress today.

Ran clamps for the tail light harnesses.

Welded the tabs to the tub on both sides.

Now the tub is mounted on both sides. I had to order more tabs for the front and the rear.

Did you weld in your slippers?

I welded in slippers and shorts because I wore shorts to Dover and fried my shins and ankles so bad it still hurts.

I did put a long sleeve shirt on because I was getting sparks on my arms.
